Presentation at a glance:

Markets do not simply exist, but they become, as a result of many dynamic human efforts. The purpose of this presentation is to critically review and synthesise market theories defining markets and their evolution in order to investigate the transformation and evolution of the tourism markets and tourism distribution chain. The presentation thoroughly reviews and demonstrates the usefulness of the concepts of market plasticity, market performativity, learning "with the market" and service-dominant-logic for identifying and further investigating the market-driving strategies of tourism intermediaries. The validity and the practical implications of this analysis are shown by analysing the e-business models of several tourism intermediaries. The presentation concludes by discussing the implications of market plasticity on the development of competitive strategies and e-business models.
