“Mines, olives and monasteries: Aspects of the environmental history of Chalkidiki” conference was held on Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th 2015 coordinated by the IHU and the Law Association of Thessaloniki. The conference was a great success and we were delighted to welcome such a great group of academics to share their knowledge on Chalkidiki, an area with archaeological findings, abundant narrative and archival resources, but also a controversial public image, where quality agriculture, tourism, monasteries and extractive industry coexist.

The conference was coordinated by Basil C. Gounaris, Professor of Modern History at the Department of History & Archaeology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who gave a welcome address and introduced the lecturers Professor Antonio Ortega Santos from Granada, Assistant Professor Selçuk Dursun from Middle East Technical University, Ankara and Assistant Professor Vaso Seirinidou from National Kapodistrian University of Athens. It is worth noting that during the opening event a documentary on the environmental history of Chalkidiki, directed by Mr. Manolis Zandes, was presented. This documentary, which was a part of an inter-scientific research programme funded by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology - GSRT (Programme Excellence II), will be complimentary distributed to public Junior High Schools and High Schools in Chalkidiki. The second day, the conference was held at the premises of the International Hellenic University, with 15 invited speakers.

The event ended with questions and discussion with the participants. It is worth noting that in September 2015, the School of Humanities of the International Hellenic University is organizing the 2nd International Workshop on the Black Sea in Antiquity.
