Apostolos Doxiadis at IHU "Historical Truth: Scientific, Literary or Judicial?"

The School of Humanities and the School of Sciences and Technology of the International Hellenic University are pleased to welcome Apostolos Doxiadis and invite you to his lecture on

Historical Truth: Scientific, Literary or Judicial?

Since Herodotus, often referred to as "the father of history", said that his book was a result of his own "observation, reasoning and investigation", the writing of history has been considered to partake of the scientific method. But the frequent disputes among historians on the interpretation of events are more reminiscent of the atmosphere of the courtroom. And the heavy reliance of most historians on narrative to express their findings makes many people speak of history as being more of a literary pursuit, an art than a science. Do these three paradigms, the scientific, the judicial and the literary, express fundamentally different theories of the historical enterprise, or are they distinct yet compatible views of one and the same discipline?
