Lecture on Jewish communities in Byzantium


Dan Shapira is a Professor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel. His extensive work focuses on the Ottoman Empire, minorities in the Ottoman Empire, Kurds, Persia, the former Soviet Central Asian Republics and Khazar history. He has studied Pahlavi, Arabic and New Persian literature while also drawing on sources from other historiographical traditions (Medieval Greek included). The topic of his lecture is Jewish communities in Byzantium. The speaker will provide the audience with a broad sketch of Byzantine Jewry not in only in the Empire’s large cities but also in minor ones, covering a large period (from the Middle Byzantine period to later times), covering its relations with authorities, its place in local societies, collective perceptions of it and most important sources.
