Excavation 2017 news report

School of Humanities, Excavation 2017

News Report

From June 12th until July 7th 2017, the School of Humanities successfully carried out the second season of its own archaeological Excavation at the site called “Trapeza of Neo Rysio – Kardia”, under the Direction of Assistant Professor of Classical Archaeology Manolis Manoledakis. For a period of four weeks, the Scientific Staff of the School of Humanities supervised a team of 22 postgraduate students and Alumni of the School, as well as graduate and post-graduate students from other Archaeological Departments of Greek Universities, who participated at the archaeological investigation of a settlement that, according to the excavated material, can be dated some centuries before the foundation of the city of Thessaloniki.

While during the first season (June 2016) research was concentrated on surveying the site and cleaning the surrounding wall of its upper terrace, during the second season (June 2017), the research team dug trial trenches that brought to light parts of buildings and highly interesting archaeological finds (pottery, stone and metal tools, spindle whorls and loom weights, bones and sea-shells). At the same time, students had also the opportunity to practice at the cleaning, storing, inventorying and photographing the excavated material.

More news coming soon!

The excavation is funded by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation
