Our EMBA students Andromachi Avramopoulou and Maria Kritsa were among the winners of the Financial Times MBA Essay Competition. Andromachi and Maria were invited to attend the 2015 Financial Times Marketing Innovators Summit in London (2 June 2015) and had the opportunity to network with marketing pioneers and some of the sharpest international business minds. IHU supports family business initiatives

IHU supports family business initiatives
    

Numerous family business representatives filled IHU amphitheater in 18 June to take part in an event entitled “Family business rebranding”. The event was organised within the context of promoting the MSc in Management and the Executive MBA. A new module is added from this year in the Msc in Management entitled “Family Business Management” in an effort to link the university with family business and to provide academic and practical support to small and medium sized family businesses that form the spine of the Greek economy.

The event was coordinated by Costas Andriopoulos, Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Cass Business School, City University London and Coordinator of the Msc in Management at International Hellenic University while the Vice Mayor for Economic Development Mr Petros Lekakis gave a welcome address representing the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

In his initial remarks Professor Andriopoulos introduced some important statistical data relating to family business, such as the fact that they constitute two thirds of business globally, according to a study by Harvard Business School, as well as the fact that 70 to 90 % of the global GDP annually comes from family business.

Success and cooperation among generations was the focus of the first debate speech among Stefanos Tziritis (President and  CEO), Thanos Tziritis (Executive Vice President) and Ioanna Tziriti (Marketing Manager) representatives of ISOMAT SA Company. During their speech the family members analysed the way in which succession in the family company takes place and also the two succession scenarios, that of the “dedicated” successor and the “resistant” successor one. The aim is twofold as it encompasses the parallel growth of both the company and the successors.

The presentation of three cases studies followed by the owners of the companies Kwnstantinos Custom Made Shoes, Mr Konstantinos Theofanidis, The Felters, Mr Konstantinos Chatziagapoglou and COCO-MAT, Mr Kostas Madenas.


Mr Dimitris Papazoglou (Designer-Creative Director, dimitrispapazoglou.com) and Ms Zoe Karakosta (Project Manager) gave a speech about the role of design in achieving strategic objectives for a family business and the use of applications of visual communication in targeted rebranding.

Succession in family business was the focus of the speech by Dr Konstantinos Georgakas of Gecon Consulting, who discussed reasons of failure for many family businesses analyzing the problem areas. According to Dr Georgakas, in order for succession to be smooth in companies, there is a need to clearly define the role of each member in terms of employment, remuneration, training and evaluation.


Finally Panagiotis Tzinis of Google Developers talked on “How to train Dad in new technologies” and the event ended with questions and discussion with the participants.

It is worth noting that in September 2015 the International Hellenic University is organizing another event concentrating on the financial operation of family businesses.

Graduation Ceremony 2015

Joy, excitement and pride were the prevailing feelings of the 234 postgraduate students of the International Hellenic University that flooded the Vellidis Conference Center during their graduation ceremony. The ceremony took place on Saturday, 9 May 2015 in the packed auditorium of the conference center in the presence of families and friends of the graduates, who travelled to Thessaloniki from around the world to attend the ceremony.

The ceremony began with the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate to Thomas Pfeiffer, Professor of Law at Heidelberg University Law School and Director of Heidelberg University’s Institute for Comparative and Private International Law.

The Director of Legal Studies, Professor Athanassios Kaissis introduced Professor Pfeiffer for the award. The conferment was proclaimed by the Vice President of the Governing Board of the International Hellenic University, Professor Nicolas Moussiopoulos.

In his speech, Professor Pfeiffer, among other things, said: “We, as university scholars, in any event, should be united across all borders by our permanent search for unanswered and relevant questions, by our unrelenting quest for new answers and a better understanding of men and this world, by our unconditional loyalty to the supreme authority of the truth and by our strong desire to disseminate this truth among our students and into the world.“

The conferment of Professor Pfeiffer was followed by the award of the postgraduate degrees of the School of Economics and Business Administration, the School of Humanities and the School of Science and Technology followed, together with the announcement of special awards to those students who excelled in their studies.

Ms Elpiniki Dodou, who received an LLM in Transnational and European Commercial Law, spoke to the audience on behalf of the graduates. “The period of our studies at the International Hellenic University will be etched in our memories as a cycle of laborious effort, with personal sacrifices and tireless work in a demanding environment of high academic standards. It will also be remembered as a fascinating journey towards knowledge.”, she said.

Ms Christina Calbos, graduate in the Master’s in Black Sea Studies, also spoke, on behalf of the students. Among other things she said: "The International Hellenic University continues the historical legacy of Thessaloniki as a cultural capital and confluence of cultures, providing us with the wonderful chance to study, learn and creatively engage with each other. It has been an experience of a lifetime – to return to the beautiful land of my ancestors; to study and learn beside you all; to discuss politics, economics, history, art, philosophy and social issues not only within the classroom but also late at night in cafes and bars in this city that somehow begs to be the backdrop for such conversations. I could never have hoped for such a wonderful experience and opportunity”.

The ceremony was closed by the Vice President of the Governing Board of the International Hellenic University, Professor Nicolas Moussiopoulos, who congratulated the graduates and their families, saying: ”Great and important achievements are the result of independent spirit, great diligence, consistency, assertiveness and effectiveness. They are the result of an irresistible force to create excellence. We cultivate excellence through research and teaching and we hand it over to Society." His final call to the graduates was “Look ahead, aim high”.
