IHU alumnus start-up success story

Nikolaos Koumartzis, graduate of the MSc in Strategic Product Design 2014 of the International Hellenic University (IHU), is the founder of the start-up company Luthieros Music Instruments (http://en.luthieros.com/) which amid the economic crisis, succeeded in exporting many ancient Greek musical instruments worldwide.  Luthieros uses natural materials and gives them a new reason for existence: making them able to produce sounds, music and to help people explore their creativity and provoke strong emotions.

Nikolaos started “The Lyre 2.0 Project” as part of his thesis at the International Hellenic University (IHU), gradually developed it and currently his musical instruments are sold in countries such as USA, Canada, Chile, Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, China, Australia, Spain and others. Continue your studies at a postgraduate level in the next academic year at the International Hellenic University.

While studying at IHU he used the 3D Scanning and 3D Digital Modelling technologies offered to IHU students and constructed the first prototype of ancient musical lyres. After graduating, he evolved his innovative idea and together with his father, who is a musical instrument craftsman, started a small family business which gradually has become known around the globe.

The latest success of the project is the use of the Luthieros lyres in the music of the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Ben-Hur that premiered in Greece a few days ago. The instruments were chosen by the composer Marco Beltrami, who was twice nominated for an Oscar for his music in the films Hurt Locker and 3:10 to Yuma.

On October 1 and 2, 2016, for the second consecutive year, he organizes an annual festival on the music in Ancient Greece. The festival is co-organised with the multipurpose cultural venue (Seikilo.com) created by Luthieros company this year in Thessaloniki. During the festival an exhibition of ancient lyres will be on display and concerts and ancient lyre lessons will take place.
