International Hellenic University-Smart IHU
project presentation at Science Cafe

“Information and Communication Technologies for
Energy Efficiency and Better Quality of Life”

In collaboration with the French Institute of Thessaloniki, the British Council and the Science Center and Technology Museum (NOESIS) continue for the seventh year the organisation of the 'Science Cafe' and invite you to enjoy a coffee and discuss modern scientific issues of interest with experts in the field.

This December the Science Cafe welcomes the invited speaker, Dr. George Koutitas, academic assistant and co-supervisor of the Smart International Hellenic University Project (Smart IHU),  who will present current practices and innovations in the area of 'Smart-Grids' and 'Smart-Buildings'. The discussion concerns scientific directions and results of the research team of the Smart IHU project of the International Hellenic University.

Short Introduction:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide the required infrastructure to transform buildings and the power grid to smart entities. Smart Buildings constitute the basic element of the Smart Grid and they are called to participate to energy efficiency and provide the necessary degrees of freedom to the smart grid to self adapt and self optimize its own operation under variable load conditions. Smart buildings are able to monitor in real time energy and environmental data, transmit the data to external parties and also enable a command flow from the smart grid to fulfil different objectives. This can only be achieved if a sensor network of smart meters/actuators is deployed within the building. The applications of this system are enormous. Characteristic examples are the development of energy management and load control algorithms, smart pricing and dynamic billing that are important for both the users and the operators-energy providers of the system. With smart grids and smart buildings a more effective use of renewable energy sources is expected.

December's Science Cafe is organized in collaboration with International Hellenic University.

Science Cafe will take place at the Science Center and Technology Museum (NOESIS), this Monday 12 December 2011, at 18.30. Information: Chrysoula Melidou ((British Council 2310 378314, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
