Christoforos Koutitas
Professor C. Koutitas graduated from the Dept. of Civil Engineering of Aristotle University (AUTh) in 1970, supported by a State Scholarship during his studies.
He attended the post graduate program in Water Resources Engineering and obtained his MSE degree from the Dept. of Civil and Geological Engineering of Princeton University in 1971, supported by a scholarship from Princeton University.
He served in the Greek Army as Officer of the Corps of Engineers (1972 to 1974).
He was appointed Assistant to the Department of Civil Engineering of AUTh in 1975.
He obtained his Doctorate Degree from the Dept of Civil Eng., AUTh, in 1976. His research subject was "3-D Computational Modeling of Wind Generated Circulation in Coastal Areas with application to Thermaikos Bay".
He worked as Post Doctorate Research Fellow, on a British Council Fellowship, at the Dept. of Civil Engineering, Manchester University, from 1977 to 1979.
He was elected Professor to the Chair of Coastal and Harbor Engineering of the Dept of Civil Engineering, Democritos University of Thrace, where he served from 1980 to 1986.
He was elected Professor of Coastal and Harbor Engineering of the Division of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering, Dept of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in 1986.
His main area of research is Computational Modeling in Coastal and Harbor Engineering (marine hydrodynamics, i.e., water circulation, wind and tsunami wave generation and propagation to the coast and sediments and pollutants transport) and the technically and environmentally optimal design of port and coastal structures.
He has published over 200 papers in scientific periodicals and international conferences and has written and translated into English two relevant books (Elements of Computational Hydraulics and Mathematical Models in Coastal Engineering, both published by Pentech Press, 1988).
He has supervised 10 Doctorate Dissertations on related subjects.
He has held memberships to the Technical Chamber of Greece, ASCE, IAHR and PIANC.
His experience in Maritime Engineering, Coastal Zone Management and the Design of Coastal Structures derives from almost 30 years of teaching undergraduate courses in Coastal and Harbor Engineering and Computational Hydraulics and postgraduate courses in Marine Environmental Protection and Coastal Zone Management, the supervision of PhD theses, participation as scientific leader in more than 30 research projects financed by national agencies and the European Commission (11th and 12th DG), from his contribution as expert to MAST program (DG XII EC), participation to the Modeling Coordination Committee of the MAST program, participation in the Scientific Committee of the National Center of Marine Research (NCMR), initiatives in the organization and realization of a European Universities network within ERASMUS related to education on Coastal Engineering and finally from his extensive consultancy work with private firms and public authorities of Greece related to the design of Coastal and Harbor projects.
He served as Chairman of the Dept. of Civil Engineering of Democritus University in 2005.
He served as President of the Board of the Thessaloniki Port Authority S.A. from 2004 to 2006.
Since June 2006 he has been Vice Chairman of the Governing Board of the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki, Greece.
